Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & Bounce
Mobilising the joints and finding the bounce — that loose, weighted groove that every street style sits on before any harder moves come in.
Foundation Drills
Drilling the week's focus — breaking top rock and footwork, popping hits and waves, or locking points and freezes — one style at a time, broken right down.
Combos & Freezes
Threading the drills into short combinations, dropping into beginner-friendly freezes and learning the transitions that move you cleanly between levels.
Freestyle Lab
Guided freestyle games that get you reacting to the beat and trusting your own choices, building the nerve to move without a set routine to follow.
Cypher & Cool-Down
An open circle where anyone who wants to takes a turn, the rest hyping them on, then a stretch to bring the heart rate back down.
About Street Dance Classes in Oxford
Street dance is the family of styles that came up on pavements, in parks and at jams rather than in a mirror-lined studio — breaking, popping and locking chief among them. Our weekly street dance classes in Oxford keep that spirit front and centre, drilling the real foundations of each style: the footwork and freezes of breaking, the hits and waves of popping, the snap and lock of the lock. This is movement you own and improvise, not a chart routine you copy beat for beat.
Oxford sees the odd workshop and a lively student jam scene, but a steady weekly class for adults that teaches the breadth of street styles has been the missing piece. Ours run from a studio we hire in the city centre, with the flat, open floor that footwork and floorwork actually need, and they pull in dancers from across town and out toward Abingdon, Witney, Bicester and Banbury. Each style is taught with respect for where it came from, while staying genuinely beginner-friendly.
You will not need any experience or a crew to join — the bounce is where everyone starts, and the cypher is open to whoever feels ready. Wear something you can move and drop to the floor in, and flat trainers with a flexible sole. What You Get From Street Dance
The Real Foundations
We teach the roots, not a watered-down version — where breaking, popping and locking came from and how the moves are meant to be built. Understand the why, and the how lands far faster.
Freestyle You Own
Street dance is about making something in the moment. We coach you to react to the music and trust your instincts, so you walk out able to move without a routine to lean on.
A Proper Workout
Footwork, freezes and explosive transitions hit your core, legs and stamina hard — a sweat-soaked session that feels like play rather than a gym slog.
Cypher & Crew Energy
The circle is where nerves turn into confidence. Friendly battles and a room that hypes every turn build the bottle to perform — and a crew that has your back.
Your Street Dance Journey
From your first bounce to holding your own in the circle — here is how it unfolds.
Finding the Bounce
Getting Started
The groove and bounce, breaking top rock, the first popping hits and a basic lock. Getting the body loose and used to moving with weight, attitude and a bit of swagger.
What to Wear
Comfortable kit you can floor in — joggers, a tee or hoodie. Flat trainers with a flexible, cushioned sole. Dress for movement and dress like you.
Building Vocabulary
Style Foundations
Working deeper into breaking footwork, popping waves and locking sequences, picking up the history behind each and beginning to sense which one suits your body.
First Freestyles
Guided freestyle drills where you move off the beat instead of a count, finding your own ideas and slowly building the nerve to take a turn in the cypher.
Finding Your Flavour
Your Own Style
Going further in the style that grabs you — longer freestyles, tougher combos and freezes, and learning to blend the foundations into movement that reads as yours.
The Circle
At ease in the cypher, plugged into the room and starting to show character. Street dance is a culture as much as a class, and you are part of it now.
The Street Dancer
Sharper Skills
A confident freestyler across more than one style, comfortable trading in a battle and inventing your own combinations with the originality the culture prizes.
What Comes Next
Test yourself at a local jam or battle, go deep on a single style, or pick up our hip-hop class for broader cultural grounding and fresh foundations.
Street Dance FAQ
The things newcomers usually want to know before they step into the circle.
Do I need any dance background to start street dance? +
None whatsoever. Every style we cover is built on a simple bounce and a bit of groove, and that is exactly where total newcomers begin. We pull each move apart slowly, drilling the foundation before stacking anything on top, so a first-timer and a returning dancer can share the same floor comfortably.
What separates street dance from a commercial or hip-hop class? +
Commercial leans on polished, camera-ready routines set to chart tracks, and our hip-hop class digs into groove, foundations and freestyle. Street dance here is the raw studio-meets-pavement strain — breaking, popping and locking, the footwork and freezes, and the cypher-and-battle culture that grew up around them. It is about owning a move, not mirroring a music video.
Which street dance styles will I actually learn? +
The class rotates through the cornerstones — breaking top rock and footwork, the hits and waves of popping, and the snap-and-freeze of locking. Across the weeks you sample each one, pick up the freezes and transitions that link them, and start to notice which style your body gravitates towards.
What does a street dance class in Oxford cost? +
One drop-in is £10, with nothing to sign and no joining fee. If you would rather lock in a run of weeks, a four-week block is £32 — that lands at £8 a session. No contracts and no membership; turn up when the timetable fits around you.
What is the address for the street dance class? +
We run them from a studio we hire in the centre of Oxford — a short walk from Gloucester Green and the train station. It has the smooth, open floor that breaking and footwork need, and further venues around the city are in the pipeline.
What should I wear, and which trainers are best? +
Go for clothes you can drop to the floor and throw shapes in — joggers or tracksuit bottoms, a tee or hoodie, nothing restrictive. Flat trainers with a bit of cushioning and a flexible sole grip well for footwork and protect the knees during breaking. Street style is personal, so wear what feels like you.
What is a cypher, and will I be made to battle? +
A cypher is the circle dancers form to take turns and trade ideas, and a battle is just a friendly back-and-forth within it. Both sit at the heart of street culture, so we make space for them every week — but stepping in is always your call. Plenty of people watch and clap for a while before they take their first turn.
Is breaking (b-boying and b-girling) part of the class? +
Yes — breaking foundations are baked in. You will work top rock, six-step and other footwork, get comfortable dropping down and back up, and learn beginner-friendly freezes. We build the strength and control gradually, so the power moves you see online have a sensible on-ramp rather than a cold start.
What music do you play in street dance class? +
Whatever the style calls for. Funk drives the locking, electro and synth-funk power the popping, and breakbeats carry the breaking — with hip-hop and a few crossover cuts dropped in around them. Learning to ride the drum and the accent, rather than just the melody, changes how every track feels under your feet.
Can I book private street dance or crew sessions? +
Absolutely. One-to-one coaching and small crew sessions can be arranged for sharpening a particular style, prepping a routine or readying a group for a show or battle. Get in touch and tell us what you are working towards and we will shape the sessions around it.
