Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Posture

Lazy body rolls, slow hip circles and chin-up posture drills to wake up the spine and settle into the unhurried, teasing tempo burlesque lives by.

10–25 mins

Struts, Bumps & Grinds

The signature moves broken down one at a time — the catwalk strut, the cheeky hip bump, the slow grind and a shoulder shimmy with plenty of attitude.

25–40 mins

Chair & Floor Work

Draping over a chair, rising with control and rolling through low floor poses — the dramatic, glamorous shapes that give a routine its theatrical bite.

40–50 mins

Boa & Glove Flair

Playing with a feather boa, peeling a long satin glove and teasing the audience with a fan — learning to handle a prop with a wink and perfect timing.

50–60 mins

Routine & Cool Down

Stringing it all into a short cabaret number performed full-out with character, then a gentle stretch to ease the body and bank what you have learned.

About Burlesque Dance Classes in Oxford

Burlesque is the cheeky, glamorous art of the cabaret tease — part dance, part comedy, part pure showmanship. Our weekly burlesque classes in Oxford teach the vintage vocabulary that makes it sing: the strut and the pose, the bump-and-grind, slow body rolls and the shimmy, plus chair work and floor work for that theatrical drama. We add flair with a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, and shape it into short routines you can perform with a knowing wink — fully clothed throughout.

Oxford loves a bit of theatre, yet a dependable weekly burlesque class for adults has been surprisingly hard to find in the city. Ours are launching from a private, curtained studio we hire in Oxford city centre, an easy walk from the New Theatre and Gloucester Green, and welcoming dancers from across Oxford as well as Abingdon, Witney, Bicester and Banbury. The mood is warm, mischievous and entirely free of judgement — a room where a bit of sass is the whole point.

Every body is a stage body here, at every age and every level, and beginners are genuinely welcome. You can dance in heels for that classic showgirl line or stay barefoot for the floor work, and there is no fitness or flexibility you need to reach first. What You Get From Burlesque

Confidence You Keep

Learning to own a room in slow, deliberate motion does wonders off the stage too. Dancers leave standing taller, walking bolder and feeling far more at home in their own skin.

Vintage Cabaret Flair

Boas, gloves, fans and chairs become your playthings. You will pick up the props, the poses and the cheeky timing that give classic burlesque its sparkle and drama.

Your Own Character

Burlesque hands you a persona to step into — a swagger, a look, a wink. Trying on that confident alter ego is liberating and a genuine joy to perform.

Every Body Welcome

There is no shape, size, age or fitness level to reach first. Burlesque celebrates the body you have right now, and our room is warm, playful and free of judgement.

Your Burlesque Dance Journey

From your very first strut to a show-ready cabaret act — here is how it unfolds.

Week 1–4

Finding the Swagger

Getting Started

The catwalk strut, slow hip circles, the shoulder shimmy and a confident pose. Learning to move with deliberate, teasing slowness instead of rushing through it.

What to Wear

Something fitted you can see your lines in, plus a little glamour if you like. Dance in heels for height or stay barefoot — both are completely fine.

Month 2–3

Adding the Cheek

Building Technique

Bumps and grinds, body rolls, chair work and your first floor poses come together into short sequences with real attitude and a cheeky sense of timing.

Finding a Persona

Starting to shape your own burlesque character — a name, a look, a walk. This is where a curious beginner quietly becomes a performer.

Month 4–6

Working the Props

Full Routines

Complete cabaret numbers with a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan. Learning to use the whole stage, command attention and milk a pause for all it is worth.

The Art of the Tease

Comedic timing, the slow reveal, eye contact and music choice — the theatrical craft that lifts burlesque from a routine into a proper act.

Month 6+

Stage-Ready Showgirl

Showcase & Beyond

The option to perform at a cabaret night or showcase, building your own solo act with original choreography, costume ideas and a track that is unmistakably yours.

What Comes Next

Branch into heels class for extra polish, gather friends for a group session, or keep refining the act that feels most like you.

Burlesque Dance FAQ

The points beginners most like to settle before stepping into the spotlight.

Do I need any dance background to start burlesque? +

None whatsoever. Burlesque rewards attitude far more than technique, and beginners are genuinely welcome. We break every strut, shimmy and pose down slowly, so a first-timer can pick up a short routine in a single weekly session and feel like a performer by the end of the hour.

Is there a dress code for a burlesque class? +

Something fitted that lets you see your lines in the mirror, plus a little vintage glamour if you fancy it. You can dance in heels for that cabaret swagger or stay barefoot on the floor — both are welcome. Bring a long glove or a feather boa if you have one, though we have props to share.

Does burlesque actually involve stripping? +

No — you stay fully dressed for the whole class. Burlesque is the playful art of the tease, the bump-and-grind and the cheeky reveal of a glove or a boa, not actual stripping. What you build here is stage presence, posture and the confidence to hold an audience, all of which you keep long after the music stops.

What is the price of a burlesque class in Oxford? +

A single drop-in is £10 with no joining fee and nothing to sign. If you would rather commit, a four-week block is £32, which comes out at £8 a class. There are no contracts and no membership, so you can come along whenever the timetable suits you.

What is the address for the burlesque classes? +

Sessions are launching at a studio we hire in central Oxford — a short stroll from Gloucester Green and the New Theatre. The room is private and curtained, which suits the cheeky side of burlesque, and more venues around the city are on the way.

Do I have to dance in high heels? +

Not at all. Heels add height and that classic showgirl line, but plenty of dancers prefer bare feet or soft flats, especially for the floor work. Start in whatever feels steady, and if you want to build up to heels we will strengthen your ankles and balance along the way.

Is burlesque a good choice if I lack confidence? +

It might be the best choice. Some of our boldest dancers walked in convinced they could never hold a room. Burlesque hands you a character to step into and a slow, deliberate way of moving that makes self-consciousness melt away, so the confidence tends to arrive faster than you would expect.

What sort of moves will I learn in class? +

Expect struts and poses, hip bumps and grinds, slow body rolls, the shimmy, plus chair work and floor work that show off attitude. We layer in flair with a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, and shape it all into a short glamorous routine you can perform with a wink.

Which body types and ages is burlesque for? +

Every single one. Burlesque was built on the idea that any body is a stage body, and our adult classes welcome dancers from their late teens right through their seventies. There is no shape, size or fitness level you need to reach first — curiosity and a sense of mischief are all it takes.

Can I book a private burlesque session or group booking? +

Absolutely. One-to-one tuition and small group bookings can be arranged on request, whether you want a confidence boost, a birthday treat or a focused push on a routine. Contact us and we will tailor a session to whatever you and your friends have in mind.
