Travelling & Floor Work

Phrase & Storytelling
Learning a short set phrase and colouring it with intention, dynamics and emotional storytelling so the steps carry real feeling.
Improvisation & Unwind
A guided improvisation task to put it all into play, then slow stretching and a still moment to let the body settle before you leave.
About Contemporary Dance Classes in Oxford
Contemporary is the most expressive, free-flowing corner of the dance world — a style that swaps rigid shapes for breath, weight and the natural momentum of the body. Our weekly contemporary classes in Oxford draw on release technique, floor work, contraction and suspension and plenty of improvisation, all in service of movement that can tell a story and carry real emotion. Danced barefoot or in socks, every session builds a vocabulary that is as physical as it is heartfelt.
Oxford is rich in theatre and student performance, yet a steady weekly contemporary class for adults outside the university has been surprisingly hard to find. The class is finding its feet in a hired space in Oxford city centre, drawing curious movers from around Oxford and out to Witney, Bicester, Banbury and Abingdon. It has quickly become a favourite with curious first-timers and with adult returners rediscovering dance after years away — whatever brought you here, the class starts where you are.
You will not need flexibility, a dance background or a particular body type — only a willingness to explore how you move. Your teacher guides each idea with anatomical care and creative space in equal measure, so technique and self-expression grow side by side. Wear soft layers you can roll and stretch in, and come barefoot or in socks. Have a look through all 20 dance classes in Oxford, or pull a group together for a one-off hen party dance class.

What You Get From Contemporary
Move How You Feel
Contemporary hands you the freedom to move from emotion rather than to a fixed shape. There is technique underneath, but the aim is honest, personal expression that is yours alone.
Strength From the Ground
Rolling through the floor, suspending and recovering builds deep core strength, mobility and body awareness that a standard workout simply cannot reach.
A Moving Meditation
Breath-led phrases and improvisation quiet a busy mind, turning the hour into a release valve where you reconnect with your body and leave lighter than you arrived.
Tell a Story
Above all, contemporary teaches you to perform — to shape dynamics, hold a moment and let movement carry meaning, whether for the stage or purely for yourself.
Your Contemporary Dance Journey
From your first roll through the spine to moving with real expression — here is how it unfolds.
Finding the Floor
Getting Started
Spinal rolls, weight shifts and your first rolls into and out of the floor. Letting breath start the movement and feeling how release and gravity work together.
What to Bring
Soft, fitted layers you can stretch and roll in, and bare feet or grip socks. Tie long hair back and leave the trainers behind so you can slide on the floor.
Building Vocabulary
Developing Technique
Contraction and suspension, fall and recovery, spirals and travelling phrases. Beginning to sense how momentum, not muscle, carries you across the floor.
First Improvisations
Gentle improvisation tasks — moving to an image, a word or a sound — that build the confidence to make movement choices without a set plan.
Finding Expression
Longer Phrases
Stitching floor work, standing technique and soft jumps into flowing sequences, and playing with dynamic range — fast to slow, heavy to light, bound to free.
Emotional Storytelling
Colouring movement with intention and feeling so a phrase reads as a story, and starting to shape short ideas of your own with simple choreographic tools.
The Mover & Maker
Performing & Creating
Confident enough to interpret, improvise and perform, with the tools to build your own phrases and an optional informal showing to share your work.
What Comes Next

Contemporary Dance FAQ
The questions new movers tend to ask us before their first contemporary class.
Do I need any dance experience to start contemporary in Oxford? +
None at all. Every session is pitched for mixed levels, and we break each idea — a roll through the spine, a contraction, a fall into the floor — into clear, repeatable steps. Beginners are genuinely welcome, and the class has become a favourite with adults returning to movement after years away.
What should I wear for contemporary floor work? +
Soft, close-fitting layers you can stretch and roll in — leggings or joggers with a fitted top work well. Contemporary is danced barefoot or in socks so you can grip and slide on the floor, so leave the trainers in your bag and tie long hair back.
How much is a contemporary dance class in Oxford? +
A single drop-in is £10 with nothing to sign and no joining fee. If you would rather commit, a four-week block is £32, which comes to £8 a class. There are no contracts and no membership, so you simply come along whenever the timetable suits.
Is contemporary dance physically demanding? +
It asks a lot of the body, but it meets you where you are. Floor work, suspensions and travelling phrases build strength and stamina gradually, and we always offer a gentler option for every exercise so you can work to your own level without strain.
Where in Oxford do the contemporary classes take place? +
Sessions run from a studio we hire in the heart of Oxford city centre — a short walk from Gloucester Green and the train station. We are looking at further spaces around the city, so do ask if you would like a class nearer home.
Do I have to be flexible to join? +
No — flexibility is something the practice builds over time, not a ticket you need at the door. Contemporary cares far more about how you use your own range with intention and breath than about how far you can fold, and your mobility opens up naturally as you go.
What actually happens in a contemporary class? +
We open with a breath-led floor warm-up, move into release technique and contraction-and-suspension work, then travel across the floor with spirals and changes of level. Each class closes with set choreography or guided improvisation so you get to shape movement and tell a little of your own story.
What is release technique and floor work? +
Release technique is about letting go of held tension and using breath and gravity to power movement rather than muscling through it. Floor work takes that idea to the ground — rolling, sliding and rising through the floor so transitions feel fluid and weighted rather than forced.
Will I have to improvise in front of people? +
Only as much as you are happy to. Improvisation is introduced gently through simple tasks — responding to an image, a word or a piece of music — and you are never put on the spot. Most dancers find it becomes the part of class they look forward to most.
Can I book private contemporary sessions? +
Yes, indeed. We offer private and small-group contemporary sessions on request, useful for deepening your release technique, working on a solo or building an audition piece. Let us know what you are aiming for and we will plan around it.
