About Jazz Dance Classes in Oxford

Jazz is dance with the spotlight switched on — a punchy, theatrical style that fuses Broadway and commercial jazz with high kicks, pirouettes, sharp isolations and soaring leaps. Our weekly jazz classes in Oxford teach the technique that underpins the stage and the music video alike, building from clean fundamentals towards short routines that ask for genuine pizazz and performance energy. Whatever your starting point, you leave each session having moved, performed and grinned in roughly equal measure.

Oxford brims with theatre, student productions and amateur dramatics, yet a steady weekly jazz class aimed squarely at adult beginners and improvers has been surprisingly tricky to find. We are kicking things off in a studio we hire in Oxford city centre, pulling dancers in from right across Oxford and from Banbury, Witney, Abingdon and Bicester. With more venues on the horizon, a class close to home may be nearer than you think.

No experience and no flexibility needed to begin — your teacher breaks every combination down and stacks it up slowly, so jazz hands and leaps feel reachable from week one. Wear fitted clothes with jazz shoes, grippy socks or bare feet, and tie your hair back for the turns. Browse all 20 of our dance classes in Oxford, or rally the group for a high-energy musicals hen party.

What You Get From Jazz

Showtime Energy

Every routine is built to be performed, not just learned. You pick up facials, attack and stage presence alongside the steps, so the pizazz becomes second nature.

Kicks, Turns and Leaps

High kicks, pirouettes and travelling leaps are the signature thrill of jazz. We build them safely from the basics until they feel powerful and controlled.

A Technical Springboard

Jazz isolations, lines and timing sit underneath commercial, musical theatre and contemporary styles, so the work here makes every other class you take sharper.

A Joyful Workout

The leaps and kicks keep your heart pumping while the isolations and balances quietly build core strength — a full-body session that never feels like a chore.

Your Jazz Dance Journey

From your very first jazz square to performing a routine with real pizazz — here is how it unfolds.

Week 1–4

Jazz Foundations

Getting Started

Jazz square, ball change, chassé and pas de bourrée, plus isolating the hips, ribs and shoulders one at a time. First jazz walks and gentle quarter-turns across the floor.

What to Bring

Something fitted and easy to move in, with jazz shoes, grippy socks or bare feet. Tie long hair back so it stays put through the turns.

Month 2–3

Sharpening Up

Developing Technique

Single pirouettes, fan kicks, battements and the take-off for a first leap. Playing with dynamics — crisp, snappy accents against longer, sustained lines.

Routines

Learning short numbers set to upbeat showtunes and pop, and performing them with character rather than simply marking the moves.

Month 4–6

Finding Your Pizazz

Bigger Moves

Double pirouettes, calypso and stag leaps, quick turning sequences and a little floor work, woven into longer routines with rapid changes of direction.

Performance Quality

Layering on facials, gesture and intent, and learning to project right to the back of the room so a routine truly reads as a performance.

Month 6+

The Performer

Stage-Ready Jazz

Confident with kicks, turns and leaps, and comfortable switching between slinky Fosse, bright Broadway and commercial jazz with genuine showtime energy.

What Comes Next

Add ballet for line and control, contemporary for expression, or commercial for a current edge — jazz threads neatly through every one of them.

Jazz Dance FAQ

The questions new dancers tend to ask us before stepping into their first jazz class.

Is jazz suitable if I have never danced before? +

Yes — beginners are exactly who these sessions are built for. Every kick, isolation and turn is broken down slowly and repeated until it feels natural, then layered into short routines. You work at a pace that suits adult bodies, and no previous training is assumed.

What makes jazz different from commercial or street dance? +

Jazz keeps one foot in the theatre. It pairs Broadway showmanship with sharp isolations, high kicks, leaps and pirouettes, all delivered with deliberate performance energy and pizazz. Commercial and street borrow heavily from jazz technique, but jazz puts the stage, the lines and the storytelling front and centre.

What should I wear and bring to a jazz class? +

Close-fitting kit so your lines stay visible — leggings or joggers and a fitted top. Jazz shoes are perfect, though bare feet or grippy socks are fine to begin with. Tie long hair back for the turns and bring a water bottle, as the kicks and leaps build up a sweat.

What are the prices for your Oxford jazz classes? +

A single drop-in is £10 with nothing to sign and no joining fee. If you would rather commit, a four-week block is £32 — that is £8 per class. There are no contracts and no membership, so you simply come along whenever the timetable works for you.

Whereabouts in Oxford are the jazz classes held? +

Sessions are launching at a studio we hire in Oxford city centre — a short walk from Gloucester Green and the Covered Market. We are adding more locations across the city, so do ask if you would like a class nearer home.

Do I need to be flexible before I take up jazz? +

Not in the slightest. The warm-up and technique work steadily open up your hips, hamstrings and shoulders, so the high kicks and extensions arrive with practice. You begin within your own range and watch it grow week by week rather than arriving able to do the splits.

Which tracks do you put on during a jazz class? +

Plenty of upbeat, showtune-friendly tracks — big-band swing, musical numbers, funk and current chart pop. The playlist follows the flavour of the routine, whether we are channelling slinky Fosse cool or a bright, kick-heavy Broadway finale full of jazz hands.

Will jazz help me with performing or stage auditions? +

It will. Casting panels look for clean pirouettes, controlled kicks, quick pick-up of choreography and genuine performance energy — all of which sit at the heart of jazz. Even if you never audition, that pizazz and stage presence carries into any other style you dance.

Is jazz a proper workout? +

Very much so. Between the leaps, fan kicks and travelling sequences your heart rate stays high, while the isolations and balances quietly build core strength and control. An hour of jazz leaves you warm, worked and grinning, without ever feeling like a gym session.

Can I book private or small-group jazz lessons? +

Of course. One-to-one and small-group jazz coaching can be arranged on request, whether you want to nail your pirouettes, sharpen a routine or prepare for an audition. Send us a note and we will shape the sessions to suit you.
